Important Notice: The DataViz products DO NOT include translators for PageMaker, QuarkXPress or any other page layout formats. The following documentation is intended to give you suggestions of other products or methods that we have come across that may help you. If you have problems using any of the products or methods described, please contact the appropriate company for help.
Quark does not have the ability to import PageMaker files. Markzware (800-300-3532 ext. 206 or 714-756-5100 or www.markzware.com) makes a product (PM->QXP XT) to go from PageMaker to Quark. They have both a Windows and a Mac version. The program is also cross-platform compatible. That means it can translate from PageMaker Mac to Quark Windows or PageMaker Windows to Quark Mac. It's a QuarkXPress XTension which means you must have Quark installed for PM->QXP XT to work. DataViz did not test this product and cannot verify the quality of the translations it provides or its limitations.
Here are a few suggestions that may help in various situations:
PageMaker Mac to Quark Windows:
- Have PageMaker Windows open the PageMaker Mac file and save it as a PageMaker Windows file.
Note: You must have the same version of PageMaker on the Mac and PC for this to work. That is a limitation of PageMaker.
- Use the PM->QXP XT software to convert the file to QuarkXPress.
PageMaker Windows to Quark Mac:
- Have PageMaker Mac open the PageMaker Windows file and save it as a PagePaker Mac file.
Note: You must have the same version of Quark on the Mac and PC for this to work. That is a limitation of Quark.
- Use the PM->QXP XT software to convert the file to QuarkXPress.
Alternative Workaround Method:
Can be used with both PageMaker and QuarkXPress
- Export as an EPS or TIFF file.
- Using your DataViz product do an EPS to EPS transfer or TIFF to TIFF transfer.
- Import/Place the transferred file.
- If you are not happy with the results, try contacting PageMaker or QuarkXPress. They may have a better solution. You can also try using one of the above mentioned products as well.
PageMaker 6.0 (Mac and Windows) and above includes a separate program titled "QuarkXPress Converter" to translate QuarkXPress to PageMaker. It supports Quark 3.0 and higher. It isn't cross platform. It can only go from Quark Windows to PageMaker Windows and Quark Mac to PageMaker Mac. Contact Adobe Systems Incorporated for information on obtaining and using this program.
If you are using PageMaker 6.5 (for Mac or Windows) there is an update to QuarkXPress Converter version 3.0. This update is available from Adobe's Free Plug-ins & Updates section on their web site (www.adobe.com).
The following is an excerpt from Adobe's site:
The QuarkXPress Converter 3.0 enables you to convert QuarkXPress documents into Adobe PageMaker 6.5 documents. The QuarkXPress Converter 3.0 is an update to the converter included with PageMaker 6.5 (i.e., version 2.01). The new converter opens QuarkXPress publications created on the Macintosh or in Windows and maps the following QuarkXPress elements to corresponding elements in PageMaker 6.5:
- Polygon objects in QuarkXPress are converted to polygon objects in PageMaker.
- QuarkXPress documents are converted to PageMaker 6.5 publications. (The converter cannot convert directly to PageMaker 6.0 or earlier publications.)
In addition, the following QuarkXPress elements map to corresponding elements in PageMaker 6.5 based on the settings you select in the Converter:
- Items with runarounds are converted with or without text wrap in PageMaker.
- Picture boxes in QuarkXPress are converted to standalone graphics or graphics in frames in PageMaker.
- Single-column text boxes in QuarkXPress are converted to text frames or text blocks in PageMaker.
- Multi-column text boxes in QuarkXPress are converted to threaded text frames or threaded text blocks in PageMaker.
The DataViz products support PageMaker as a transfer only. PageMaker is able to open itself from Mac & PC. You must use the same version on both the Mac and PC (This is a limitation of PageMaker).
MacLinkPlus users: When going from PageMaker Mac to PageMaker PC you must name the file using the DOS file naming convention. . A DOS file name generally follows an 8.3 naming convention. For instance a file name would be "filename.doc" where the name before the period has no more than 8 characters. Also, there are no more than 3 characters after the period. For information on how to extension map cross-platform compatible Mac files so that they launch automatically (upon double-clicking) into your PC programs,Below is an excerpt from the Adobe Web Site. There is additional information on Adobe's web site regarding transferring PageMaker files between Macs and PC (i.e. correct file naming):
To open a publication in PageMaker, it must have been saved in a version PageMaker can open, and it must have a file type or filename that PageMaker recognizes. You can transfer PageMaker publications across platforms, but you cannot transfer between PageMaker versions and across platforms at the same time. For example, you can open a PageMaker 5.0x for Windows publication in PageMaker 5.0x for the Macintosh, but not in PageMaker 6.0x for the Macintosh. To open a PageMaker 5.0x for Windows publication in PageMaker 6.0x for the Macintosh, you must first convert it to PageMaker 5.0x for the Macintosh or to PageMaker 6.0x for Windows.
Likewise, to transfer a publication across platforms to an earlier version of PageMaker (e.g. PageMaker 6.5x for Windows to PageMaker 5.0x for the Macintosh), you must save the publication in the earlier version before opening it on the other platform. For example, to transfer a PageMaker 6.5x for Windows publication to PageMaker 5.0x for Macintosh, you would need to do the following:
- Open the publication in PageMaker 6.5 for Windows, then choose File > Save As.
- In the Save As dialog box, choose A Copy in 6.0 Format from the Save As Type pop-up menu, then click Save.
- Open the PageMaker 6.0 copy of the publication in PageMaker 6.0x for Windows, then choose File > Save As.
- In the Save As dialog box, choose A Copy in 5.0 Format from the Save As Type pop-up menu, then click Save.
- Open the PageMaker 5.0 for Windows copy of the publication in PageMaker 5.0x for the Macintosh.
Because earlier versions of PageMaker do not support some features available in later versions, objects in your publication may not convert or may be modified when saved in an earlier format.
PageMaker lists publications it recognizes in its Open Publication dialog box. PageMaker for Windows identifies a PageMaker publication by its filename extension (e.g., *.pm5, *.pm6, *.p65). PageMaker for the Macintosh recognizes a file that contains PageMaker's file type in its file header, or that includes a filename extension for the same version of PageMaker (e.g., PageMaker 6.0x recognizes files named with the *.pm6 extension).
The DataViz products support QuarkXPress as a transfer only. QuarkXPress is able to open itself from Mac & PC. You must use the same version on both the Mac and PC (This is a limitation of QuarkXPress).
Special Link To QuarkXPress' Tech Notes: We have discovered that Quark's web site actually has extensive coverage on this topic. They have three documents that address Cross-Platform Issues. They cover areas dealing with Naming Conventions, Fonts and Graphics. As of March 3, 1998 these documents can be reached at the following URLs:Since DataViz does not support QuarkXPress translation, we strongly recommend you use the resources available on Quark's web site.
MacLinkPlus users: Please refer to the section above entitled "Special Link to QuarkXPress' Tech Notes" for detailed information. That will give you the best information. However, if you are looking for a quick DataViz answer, refer to the directions that follow:
