How do I translate a word processing document (WordPerfect) to a page layout document (PageMaker or QuarkXPress)?
The DataViz products are designed to translate to/from like applications. This means a word processor to word processor, spreadsheet to spreadsheet, database to database and graphic to graphic. Translate the word processor file to a file format that PageMaker or QuarkXPress can import.
On the Mac, PageMaker and QuarkXPress can import MS Word, and Rich Text Format (RTF). For other file formats and the exact versions check your PageMaker & QuarkXPress manuals.
On the PC, PageMaker and QuarkXPress can import WordPerfect, and MS Word for Windows. For other file formats and the exact versions check your PageMaker & QuarkXPress manuals.
PageMaker News: This following information is accurate of of this writing (5/19/98). Adobe has posted Excel Spreadsheet Import Filter 3.0 for PageMaker, which now includes support for spreadsheets created by Excel 98(among other Mac and Windows formats) for Mac OS and a Microsoft Word 97/98 Import Filter 2.0 which adds support for importing Word 97 and Word 98 (Word 8.0) documents into PageMaker 6.5 or later publications. Follow the above links to Adobe's web site for more detailed information on obtaining the filters.
How do I translate a database (MS Works DB) to/from FileMaker Pro?
The DataViz products support FileMaker Pro as a transfer only. Try using an intermediate file format in translation. An example is translating from MS Works DB to DBF, and then importing the DBF file into FileMaker Pro. FileMaker is able to import and export the following formats:
- Tab-Separated Text
- Comma-Separated Text
- DBF
How do I translate Power Point Mac to/from Power Point PC?
The DataViz products support it as a transfer only. PowerPoint is able to open itself from Mac & PC. You must use the same version on both the Mac and PC (This is a limitation of Power Point).
MacLinkPlus users: When going from PowerPoint Mac to PowerPoint PC you must name the file using the DOS file naming convention. A DOS file name generally follows an 8.3 naming convention. For instance a file name would be "filename.doc" where the name before the period has no more than 8 characters. Also, there are no more than 3 characters after the period. For information on how to extension map cross-platform compatible Mac files so that they launch automatically (upon double-clicking) into your PC programs,Note: According to one of our customers, Microsoft has a translator on its web site for PowerPoint 4.0 Macintosh which allows it to read PowerPoint 7 for Office 95 files. This is not a DataViz translator and its capabilities have not been verified by DataViz.
The following table is a summary of a few common "cross-platform compatible" file extensions you may see on a PC disk. In many cases, these extensions are required or expected by the application. In other cases, they are common usage but are not required. Generally you need to add the DOS extension to the Mac file name so the PC program can recognize it.
Note: This list is by no means a complete and exhaustive list of possible cross-platform compatible file formats. If the file format you are using is not listed below, you can find the information by contacting the software application's manufacturer.
